Toddy Tapping Workshop 2

The second session of the Toddy Tapping Workshop had a great response with more than a dozen new participants joining in. We had two traditional toddy tappers sharing their knowledge with us – Laurence Martins from Tuem and Francis Pereira from Goa Velha.

The session started with Mr Miguel Braganza with his encyclopedic knowledge about agri-flora sharing tips about pest control and general care for the coconut tree.

We then had a session on the toddy tapping process done the traditional way. The participants were given a close view of the live process along with detailed explanations.

There was also a session on coconut tree climbing using the climbing gear with proper safety precautions.

The highlight of the afternoon was the fresh Coconut Toddy available for all to taste. This was followed by a sumptuous lunch of  traditional Fish Curry and Rice.

The participants now have an active WhatsApp group where they continue to exchange information and the experts continue to guide them. Some participants are already successfully tapping toddy and we hope to have more successes as we go along.

Annual day of Don Bosco Pre-Primary and Primary School, Oxdel

The School Annual Day was held on 7th February 2020, at the Dinanath Mangueshkar Hall, at Kala Academy with great elation and gusto. The evening began with the compere, Mrs. Sonia Figueiredo, welcoming the audience, followed by the Captains of the four houses i.e. Mayank Gomes from the Yellow house, Viraj Kurtikar from the Blue house, Rohan Kankonkar from the Red house and Mangesh Shirodkar from the Green house, escorting the Chief Guest Fr. Jose Sequeira and the other dignitaries to their seats. Students of the Pre-Primary section welcomed them with flowers.

The programme commenced with a prayer dance by the girls of class 4, followed by the Chief Guest garlanding the statue of St. Don Bosco, in the presence of the Manager of the School, Fr. Clive Telles, the Provincial, Fr. Felix Fernandes and the Rector Fr. Tony Alemao. Fr. Clive officially welcomed the guests and the parents.

The cultural programme unfolded beautifully, with the little ones from the Nursery staging 2 traditional Goan folkdances.

Next were the students of the Lower Kindergarten, who presented two catchy numbers, “Chadda” and “Inna Meena Dicka,” followed by two dances of the Higher Kindergarten, one which showed that we have to eat healthy food and not junk food and the other a lively dance number.

Mrs. Priti Salgaonkar read the Annual Report for the academic year 2019-2020. She shared the recent changes in the School Management and the programmes and activities held during the academic year.

The children of Std. 1 put up items based on the environment, after which Fr. Jose Sequeira addressed the gathering.

This was followed by the Prize Distribution. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes to the academically deserving students of 2018-2019.

The final item of the evening was a colourful performance by the students of Std. 3 which brought out the theme of the Annual Day, “Over the Rainbow”. It started with a skit on the story of the Rainbow where all the colours began to fight, arguing about who was the best, finally realizing that when they all come together they looked even more beautiful than a single colour. It also tells us that a rainbow stands for unity and hope and when we work together we can all be beautiful like the rainbow. The item ended with the students of Std. 3 dancing to a Rainbow song.

One of the highlights of the evening was a surprise dance by the Teachers, who danced to a remix number of English, Hindi and Konkani songs.

In the end all the students along with their Class Teachers came up on the stage, while the theme song “Over the Rainbow” by Louis Armstrong was played.

The Vote of Thanks was proposed by the Manager, Fr. Clive Telles.
